Personal, Social and Emotional Development: a prime area of learning
A course for early years teachers and practitioners working in schools, nurseries and other under fives settings

Following the publication of the Tickell Report in May 2011, PSED was one of the three prime areas of learning to be identified. These prime areas are key to the structure of the new EYFS and were selected because they form the basis of learning and development for young children. They will support children along their journey into school and help them to become lifelong learners.
We will focus on developing practice that will support:

- Personal development (Being me) – how we come to understand who we are and what we can do, how we look after ourselves.
- Social development (Being social) – how we come to understand ourselves in relation to others, how we make friends, understand the rules of society and behave towards others.
- Emotional development (Having feelings) – how we come to understand our own and others’ feelings and develop our ability to ‘stand in someone else’s shoes’ and see things from their point of view, referred to as empathy
- Developing a vocabulary of feelings that will support children to manage their own feelings and behaviour and to resolve conflict.
