Mini Mathematicians: playing, learning and thinking in mathematics EYFS
A one day course for teachers, practitioners in nurseries, and other under-fives settings.
‘We are all of us, at all ages, already highly skilled mathematicians. We just haven’t often learned it in our mathematics lessons.’
Lewis (1996: Discovering Mathematics with 4-7 year olds)
We will focus on:
- Becoming confident and excited mathematicians.
- How the environment, indoors and outdoors promotes mathematical thinking and all aspects of learning within mathematics.
- Using story to teach mathematics.
- The importance of continuous provision and how it helps to embed learning and develop skills.
- How creativity and critical thinking are integral to mathematics.
- ‘Seeing’ mathematics in play and the rich legacy of research that underpins mathematical development, play, and learning
- Everyday mathematics: making sense of numbers, patterns, shapes and measures that babies, toddlers and young children see around them.
- Partnership with parents and the impact of home learning.
- Assessing progress: observing and evaluating learning: the adult led/child initiated continuum.
Characteristics of Effective learning will be woven throughout the content of this course.
