The Characteristics of Effective Learning: the engine that drives the curriculum
A one day course for teachers and practitioners in nurseries, schools and other
under-fives settings.
"When children are encouraged and supported to follow their curiosity, to feel the satisfaction of meeting their own challenges, to think for themselves, and to plan and monitor how they will go about their activities, they become self-regulated learners who later outstrip children who may have developed more early subject-based knowledge but are more passive in their learning."
’(Moylett and Stewart 2012)
This is why the Characteristics of Effective Learning are the engine that drives the curriculum.
We will focus on:

- How playing and exploring underpins children’s learning.
- How active learning supports children to take on board challenges, develop concentration and enjoy their achievements.
- How to promote critical thinking and develop creativity so that children can make connections, develop their own ideas.
- The importance of self-regulation.
- The role of the skilful practitioner in supporting effective learning.
- How to develop practice so that characteristics of learning are interwoven throughout all aspects of learning and development.
- Raising expectations and improving the quality of learning in your setting.
