School Readiness and Transitions: Supporting the Continuum of Learning
A one day course for Early Years practitioners, Early Years teachers, head teachers, teachers and teaching assistants.
"Transitional periods in the lives of children and young people are times of threat but also of opportunity for change. If children possess adequate coping skills, are in environments that protect against excessive demands, but also have opportunities to learn and adapt through being exposed to reasonable levels of risk, then a successful transition is likely."
(Newman, T. & Blackburn, S., Interchange 78, p.8)
"School readiness has been linked with positive social and behavioural competencies in adulthood as well as improved academic outcomes in primary and secondary school, both in terms of equity and performance."
(UNICEF 2012)
We will focus on:
- What we mean by a transition.
- Exploring children’s transitions within the setting/school and externally within the family.
- Theories that help us to understand how we support children’s transitions to ensure positive outcomes.
- Transitions and their impact on progress and learning: supporting managed transitions.
- The role of the adult and, how this supports home learning?
- What does school readiness mean? Supporting children and families in the transition to school.
- Key Persons as a statutory requirement, what does this mean at your setting/school?
