Gill Coathup
Gill trained as an Early Years teacher and has worked in schools and nurseries in London and Norfolk as well as working in a High Scope setting in the USA. Gill has also worked as an LA Senior Early Years advisor, OFSTED inspector and class based primary school head teacher in a small rural school. She has also been involved in training Teaching Assistants and is committed to teachers and TA’s working in true partnership.
Currently, Gill is involved in the training and assessing of practitioners on the new EYTT programme and teaches on an Early Childhood studies degree course which is practice based. Both these activities involve lots of work within schools and other under fives settings. Gill has a master’s degree and a Ph.D from UEA. Her research involved a school based project to support failed and reluctant readers and another school based action research project with 3-8 years old linked to conflict resolution.
Gill has three children and two grandchildren who are both under five and she has been involved in their care on a weekly basis. This has proved to be a wonderful ‘hands on’ learning experience as well as a great joy and sense of wonderment at these unique and special little people.
Like Helen and Felicity, Gill is passionate about all aspects of under fives provision but is particularly interested in developing mathematical thinking, play, understanding and supporting children’s behaviour , working in mixed age classes and all aspects of literacy.
